The general English curriculum is designed to develop and strengthen
students' skills in listening, speaking, writing, reading, and language.
- Listening/Speaking
- Analyze spoken message for content, rhetorical techniques, purpose,
and credibility; evaluate delivery of spoken message; use effective
communication skills in oral presentations; and clarify and support
spoken ideas with evidence and examples.
- Reading - Read
widely at appropriate levels of difficult in classic and contemporary
texts; use a variety of word recognition and comprehension strategies;
apply knowledge of Greek Latin roots and affixes; recognize how
literary devices contribute to effect of text; acquire and refine
reading skills, including use of reference materials; and enjoy reading.
- Writing
- Use the writing process to produce different forms of writing; vary
sentence structure and use verb tenses appropriately; edit writing
based on knowledge of grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, and other
conventions of written language to produce error-free compositions;
research in multiple texts to complete projects; develop increasingly
complex research-based presentations; identify challenges faced by
publishing authors; and enjoy writing.
- Viewing/Representing
- Express and support responses to various types of media; interpret
information from media presentations; and evaluate purposes of various
media and their influences.
